So, I'm scoping some technologies forums (a part of my Internet ritual), and I'm discovering more and more people are becoming fanboys or fangirls. Fervently so. Did I miss something? Since when do people buy very expensive technology products because Microsoft or Apple or Sony or whoever made it? I don't remember growing up (or now) ever thinking, "Oh, man! _______ just released a new _____ ! I'm going to go pick it up right away without looking at the competition! I definitely won't think about where my hard earned cash is going!" Exaggeration you say? I don't think so.
I was looking at an article that recapped what Microsoft had to say about it's less-than-stellar sales of the Zune this past holiday season. Interesting, albeit biased article. But then I look at the comments for the article. I am shocked at the sheer stupidity! On a technology site no less! I won't go into specifics, but people basically commented on the Zune (and to a much lesser extent the iPod) and its software using facts and descriptions that were completely unfounded and just plain false. All in the name of their product they bought. So, they bash a product they don't own (or know much about) simply because... their penis is small? I don't know honestly.
Who cares if I bought a Zune and someone else bought an iPod! I don't! It's your money just like it's my money! I owned a PS and PS2, but "jumped ship" to the Xbox 360 because I thought it would suit my needs better. Do I bash people who own a PS3 or a Wii? Hell no! Why would I? What exactly do I gain from trying to argue that? I understand praising a product you own because you want to feel good about the purchase, and you want to tell other people your great experience. I can and do agree with that. But bashing someone else's purchase simply because it's not your own? That makes no sense to me. Be a fan of your specific purchase-- not the brand. Always reevaluate for next time you need to replace product X.
I know, I know. People have doing this for awhile. But have they really? I think the fanboy has only really emerged in the last decade to fifteen years. I don't once remember having a conversation on whether Sega or Nintendo was better. Or whether my neighbor's computer was shitty because it was a Dell and not a Hewlett-Packard like mine. Who honestly gives a shit? But, I think I answered my own question: I'm trying to find a conversation. People are much more aggressive and zealous when they know there are no consequences (like in some comment boards or forums), and there are definite consequences to saying something to someone's face. Perhaps, with the emergence of the Internet, people have forgetten what the words "logic", "facts", "first-hand", "kindness", or "discussion" mean. Maybe people have always been jackasses and blow their wad at the sound of their favorite company's name. Maybe. I don't think so though.
What do you guys think? Do fanboys annoy the crap out of you too, or am I alone on this one?
So i totally agree with you about trying to look for the best product rather than the name of the product and people staying loyal to a brand name or whatever, although i'm proly just as guilty of this as anyone else. I try not to be though. I've always found though that Mac fanboys are totally the worst and are the most outspoken about their product. However, is it fanboydom if people are just saying their product is best when it really is? I guess that's the thing though, when does it change from being totally stupid fanboydom and just really loving a specific product based on the fact that you've had it before and like what it does so is a fan of the brand name? However, there are people out there that piss me off when all they think about is oh it's got an apple on it, i'm getting it and am going to brag and tell people how much better it is than other people's products regardless. I hate that too.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it does appear that Macs has a significant fanboy following. I personally have never had a major problem with my 5 year old Dell and am happy to stay. Just because I prefer non macs does not mean that I don't see the things that apple does exceptionally well. I just don't think they suit me, so I don't buy them. I also don't bash them (except for making fun of my girlfriend's computer when something bad happens to it).
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of mp3 players, my old dell jukebox crashed a couple months ago and I need a new one (probably this summer when I can afford to drop a couple hundred, if even then...). Any recommendations? I really want to know more about products other than the ipod series, but because they have the market so saturated, it is impossible to find anyone who has personal experiences with other brands.
You're in luck, Fried! I own a Zune 80GB because I've never been a fan of iTunes or iPods. I always feel like I'm looking at a spreadsheet when I view iTunes... off subject. If you want some info on it, I definitely know my way around Zunes, Zens, and SansDisks. I definitely enjoy my Zune a lot and the Zune program is really snazzy too! Although, it did suck a lot before the recent updates, but now it's money for sure. Just let me know.
ReplyDeleteI liked Jards Zune when i played with it a bit this summer but i'm a fan of itunes so there you go. I think it's just a matter of if you like itunes then i think an ipod is just the best way to go, if not then i think the zune is proly the other best thing, but i really know nothing on the subject. I also feel really cool that i have an older ipod so that i have some sort of old school street cred (not really).
ReplyDeleteDavid what are you doing for a job right now anyway? You got that job in Philly right? Doing stuff with the heart? If i'm way off i apologize, i'm sort of in another country which should give me some excuse for being a bit out of the loop.
By the way, that picture is really scary. First off it's scary cause it's a kid who feels strongly enough about Mac to wear something like that when he certainly shouldn't be. However, i find it more scary that he's wearing a woman's swimsuit to get his point across. AMIRIGHT!? That's just wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of itunes, which is another reason I am wary of getting an ipod. If you could just give me a quick rundown of the pluses and minuses (your opinion of course) for the zune that would be great Jared.
ReplyDeleteSure, man.
ReplyDelete+ Good storage for the price
+ Wi-Fi synching with computer
+ Zune pass can get you a lot of music for cheaper than buying (I'm up to like 15,000 songs or something)
+ DRM-free for purchased songs
+ 10 free songs a month
+ The GUI for both the program and hardware is really intuitive and eye catching
+ The touch pad is easy to use (I think a lot better than the click wheel)
+ Good music discovery options (especially if you get into the social aspect)
+ Glass screen means no scratches to contend with
+ Metal backing makes it very sturdy (had mine thrown at a wall and tile floor at parties with no harm done)
+ Games for free
- Battery life is not the best (about 20-24 hrs for pure music and 3.5-5 hrs for video)
- If using Zune pass, all music disappears if you cancel the subscription
- Decent TV and movie options for DL but not as good as iTunes
- Not as many accessories available (thanks to over saturation by iPod, but that is slowly changing)
That's about all I can think of. I believe a new generation of Zunes will hit later this year sometime. I haven't heard much beyond that. I really enjoy mine, and the only thing I considered buying besides a Zune was the Creative Zen series. But they don't have much storage.
I think Garth has a Creative Zen touch if you wanna get his opinion on that.
ReplyDeleteYeah that thing broke. It just stopped working one day. I'll probably by a player sometime soon and it'll be a Zune.
ReplyDeleteGarth, that sucks. I thought those looked really sweet.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing: The Zune is really compatible with Xbox 360 too. I know you don't have one Fried, but it is quite convenient for the games that support the feature (mostly racing and sports titles).
So basically this has come full circle with Jard being a total fan boy for his ZOON. Kidding kidding.
ReplyDeleteJ effin C, I am so out of the technology loop. I have never even heard of the Zune. I've always had an iPod, I have nothing really to compare it to. It's lasted 7 years now, so that's a plus.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Fried on his stance with that mac. Whenever I get the chance, I talk shit about it on the basis of nothing. Actually, they do break down a lot. My mom's just went on the fritz and she can't logon anymore.
We need a new topic i think. I mean this one was great, but i wanna talk about something else. I can't think of anything though. I don't like Macs for no reason but don't talk shit to anyone about it.
ReplyDeleteUm, Mark, write one up then.
ReplyDeleteUHHHHH it's hard!!!
ReplyDeleteThank Jard! That definitely pushes me more in the direction of the Zune. I figure as long as it is on par with the Ipod I might as well get it.
ReplyDeleteAs for macs breaking down - my mom's mac (4.5 years old) just had its hard drive fail. My 5 year old dell on the other hand is still running like a pimp - smooth as hell.
So wow, I'm way behind on this, I had no idea you guys were writing so much on here?
ReplyDeleteAnybody else see Adam Sessler's soapbox thing from last week? Even though X-Play game Killzone 2 a 5/5, Sony fanboys were STILL giving him shit about being biased, accusing him of accepting moneyhats from Microsoft and so on. Sessler pretty much lost it about having his integrity constantly under question, and told all the haters to go fuck their mothers. Nice!
I don't blame him, to be honest. I also don't really get the staunch brand support to the point or irrational, downright angry internet posting. You should just go with whatever product you think is best and have an open mind when something potentially also good or even better comes along, right?
The ONE aspect I can see that makes any sort of sense of the fanboyism is that people seek a sense of self-justification behind their actions and decisions, and often times this results in their opinions and beliefs on things becoming increasingly polarized and extremes. So, for instance, if you had bought a PS3, you need to feel good about your decision...you need to feel in your head that you made the right decision, and the other choice (the 360) would be the wrong decision. You start making this internal adjustment to avoid cognitive dissonance. It can really easily spiral out of control from there, especially when you add in factors like the anonymity of the internet, others posting with similar but oftentimes more extreme opinions, and so on.
Also, just noticed...does that kid have a hard-on in that singlet? Wow.
