Trilogy Meter

This chart seems to be making the rounds through the weberscape and it's worth mentioning. Pretty cool concept, visualising your enjoyment of movies that way. Most of his evaluations I agree with, with a few exceptions. Matrix 2 and 3 should be way higher. I thought I like Reloaded better than Revolutions but I just rewatched them on Blu-ray and that battle scene inside the city of Zion looks incredible so I might put Rev above Reload. Star Trek doesn't really belong on there because the series has way too many other movies that matter. Nonetheless, I would ratchet 2 up a little higher and then put 1 right under it. Jurassic Park deserves to be higher, no questions. Lord of the Rings is basically spot on. I think Blade should tower over Blade 2, which admittedly wasn't bad. Terminator should be a little higher. And finally, Aliens 3 deserves much better than that. I really liked that one. Are there any other trilogies that should be on there? I can't think of anymore.

  1. Gareth, you said pretty much what I would have said... T1 should be a big higher, Alien 3 deserves better, Jurassic Park 1 should be much higher, as should Matrix 2 and 3...so yeah.

One series that originally a trilogy that they didn't mention is the Lethal Weapon series. I'd say 1 is pretty high, 2 is a big lower, and then 3 is really high, but that's just me.

A lot of these series have more than just 3 though (Trek, Batman, Star Wars, Die Hard, Rocky, etc), so it seems a little strange to just take three of the movies.

  2. Well, I logged in just for this discussion.
    1) The first Star Wars should be perfect.
    2) Die Hard 2 was by far the worst of the 3.
    3) How is Alien 3 that bad? Was it worse than or the same as T3? T3 was so retarded. At least Alien 3 stayed with the characters and plus it was directed by Fincher. How is that bad?

I think they got the Matrix trilogies right. I loved the first one and hated the next two. They weren't that bad, but the first one set the bar so high that they really messed up. Jurassic Park was awesome and pretty groundbreaking for effects, so that should be higher. I love all X-men movies, so I'm too biased to give any of them less than 8/10.

Matt, good call on Lethal Weapon series. I think 1 is by far the best, then 3, but 2 isn't that bad. Joe Pesci made it really good.

Oh, and they forgot the Look Who's Talking trilogy. All bad.

  3. Ooh, I just remembered the Starship Troopers trilogy. I just bought it on Blu-ray and haven't even seen number 2 but assume it's going to kick As and take Ns. Not as good as 1 of course, nothing is that good, and maybe a little under 3 which was a huge surprise to me mainly for having Casper in it. I'm waiting until I have a larger group of people up here to have a Troopers marathon.

  4. Good point about Matrix 2 and 3 being shitty in comparison to Matrix 1, which is still one of my favorite movies of all time.

Have you seen Alien 3, Drew? Here's why it's a little weird:
    1. the movie completely throws away every accomplishment made in the first two movies pretty much, which feels like a slap in the face to viewers from the very get-go.
    2. the production values are a little wonky. It kind of feels like a weird european movie sometimes, which feels cheap after the James Cameron over-the-top decadence of Aliens.
    3. the story itself just isn't as good as either of the first two movies.

I would like to take this time to say that Alien 1 is one of the greatest horror films of all time.

  5. ...and Aliens is possibly the best action movie of all time. There, I finished your last sentence, Matt. But as for Alien 3, I watched the Director's Cut recently (not sure if it's much different) and I quite like the smaller, more intimate feel of it. Sort of brought it back to it's roots in Alien. And I am a huge sucker for big Sci-Fi industrial design and well realized environmental art, so I enjoyed the whole setting especially the surface of the planet. Like at the beginning when that guy's riding that big draft horse out to the beach in his ragged mid-evil enviro suit? Awesome. But yes, killing the coolest character from Aliens right off the bat was a pretty dumb copout for starting fresh.

But apparently Alien 3 could have been so much more:

  6. I'm not really sure how a lot of these "trilogies" can be judged properly because in a lot of cases there are more movies. For instance, I think Lethal Weapon 4 is best of the LW movies because it has Chris Rock and Jet Li.
Jurassic Park should be a 10/10 in my opinion. First movie I ever saw that absolutely floored me with its realization of fake characters. That's what they were. T-Rex was not some animal, it was a character.
Alien 3 is decent. Same with Alien 4 (can't remember the name), but the first two are quite a lot better.
First Matrix kills, and the rest I could live with never seeing again. Only saw them once. Interesting lore but poorly executed.
First Terminator should be higher, and same with first Rocky.
And I have to give a shout out to my boy Harry Potter. Wha what?!
