Matt, you mentioned the PS9 in a comment, and this got me thinking: what would you like to see most on the next-generation of consoles? Now, I'm not talking better graphics or something we know companies are going to do anyway (online gaming, increased HD support, etc.). I'm talking about something nobody is doing right now that you would like to see! Even if the idea is completely far-fetched (but technologically feasible, please), put it up!
For me, I'd like to have cross-platform online play, the ability to plug-and-play any mouse and keyboard setup (you know they could!!), have the ability to actually see what your friends are playing-- a glimpse, if you will-- and have the ability to make old-school 2D games on your computer and then transfer them to your console of choice.
Again, don't worry about if it would never happen or "There's no way ______ would allow that to happen!" Just say what you would like if the world revolved around you. It could happen!
*guitar riff* McWORLD!!!!!
I totally agree about cross-platform multiplayer. The idea of being able to watch what your friends are playing is also a really neat idea.
ReplyDeleteI want every game for the system to be available for download. If it's a new Playstation, I want it backwards compatible all the way back to PS1, either that or have a more extensive backlist of old games to download for relatively cheap. I want a well-integrated online and social interface...think Xbox Live, but take it to the next level. I want it to be easy to program for, because the easier it is to program for, the better the games are, the smoother they run, the better they look.
Really though, my first point is the big one. I don't want to have physical media anymore. I want to download something, have it on my harddrive, and run it from there.
They need to bring back force feedback to controllers. Not just rumble that vibrates a little in your hand, but a controller that actually fights your hands and feels like it's trying to move in a specific direction. This technology exists and they had it in PC controllers about a decade ago but due to some sort of frivolous patent protection by an obscure little technology company, none of the big boys can use it. I think it would ad a pretty cool level of immersion.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how it would work exactly, but I know the basic technology is out there for eye focus targeting. A game that incorporated where the player was looking would be neat. Or what about a 1st person shooter that utilized a heart-rate/stress monitor. When the player stressed out it would affect the avatar.
ReplyDeleteJust ideas
Ooh, yeah, eye tracking is a really good one, Boardman.
ReplyDeleteI actually did a research paper last semester on how close we are to having a completely immersive system, which would incorporate all senses. I think there is a product for every sense that could be tied into gaming. For example, some Japanese guy made a smell cannon that shoots aromas into your nose. If they created a library of smells that you could replenish, they could potentially have you smell a fire burning or whatever you are looking at while playing a game. Anything to immerse yourself more into a game would be good. Sorry Laws... well.
