Camera Sushi

I just thought this was a good video, and enough inspire a discussion about food.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWQR36dW0GA&feature=featured

I could talk about the candid quality of the people in the video--the genuine reactions from people as the camera goes by, seeing people have conversations at the sushi bar, watching people eat, etc--but I just want to talk about sushi. Who likes it, and why or why not? What kinds of sushi do people like?

  1. Pretty cool video. I like anything as long as it's Nigiri. Nice and simple is the way I like it, just a big piece of fish on some rice. Sake is good to have too with some green tea to help clean the palate.

  2. That was an interesting find, Matt.
I'm kinda in the same boat as Gareth. Although, there's this place called Sushi 1 in Greeley (amazing lunch specials) that has a tempura calamari roll that is divine! I don't know what they do to the sauce but soooooo good. As for drink, I prefer Tsingtao, Sapporo, or tea.

  3. I went to a fancy sushi place in Houston and absolutely hated the rolls, but the sashimi wasn't so bad. Anyways the girl I was with loved it so that the only reason I would go.

    Tsingtao and Sapporo are good.

  4. I like all kinds of sushi. I like rolls and nigiri and sashimi, pretty much anything with fish and rice and some other stuff, i'm down with. I'm thinking my favorite food though is a good lasagna, i mean there's so many good food, bratwurst is either number one or a close two...just too much to pick from.

  5. Just to drop my two cents in...

My favorite is nigiri, just because it's sushi in its purest form. The best kinds of dishes in Japanese cuisine are the simple ones, the ones that isolate one flavor or one idea and express it in a delicious way...nigiri in the epitome of that.

Having said that, there are a lot of good rolls out there. Perhaps most importantly about rolls though, is that when you go to a sushi place, they're usually the most cost-efficient in terms of how much you get. Nigiri is great, but it sucks that it's 2 pieces for $5. With rolls, you get like 6 or 8 or 10 pieces.

  6. I too like all kinds of sushi, especially the 20 dollar buffets (lower quality yes, but I get to try a huge variety!). Although I do prefer the nigiri and sashimi. I agree with G and M - simple and damn good. But my biggest thing now, since I am a green colored man, is the eco friendlyness and health effects of the fish. I avoid most salmon (unless for sure from Alaska), Tuna (even if I can confirm that they are hand line caught they still have a ton of mercury and shit), yellowtail (un environmentally friendly farming techniques). That leaves mackerel, most of the roes (not salmon), striped bass, squid, etc. Yeah, it takes most of the fun out of it, but it wouldnt if I could find a sushi place here that serves some sustainable fish! (if that exists).
