Jefferson Out for the Season--Now What!?

Ok people. Al Jefferson tore his ACL.

Wow.

So first of all, let's process the magnitude of what just happened. Al Jefferson is by far the Wolves' best player. He's averaging gaudy All-Star caliber numbers, and honestly should be in the All-Star game even though he's on a 17-33 team. He's putting up 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 1.66 blocks per game, and shooting right around 50% from the field...all this, and he's technically playing out of position at the five rather than his natural 4.

Having watched nearly every Wolves home game this year, I can tell you that at least 50% of the Wolves' offensive sets run through Jefferson in some way...whether he's the guy who gets the ball in the post, a decoy to free up shooters, or a screener so a guard can get to the hoop, he's involved in so much of the Wolves strategy. On defense, even though he has the reputation of being a poor defender, he's always behind the guards for help defense to discourage penetration. I don't care how bad you might think he is on D, but I can tell you than guys like Tony Parker stop when they run into Jefferson and either try to float it over him or back up to take a jumper.

So, where do the Wolves go from here? They had a spectacular 10-4 January run after starting a miserable start, but now they've lost six of their last seven in the face of a tough schedule (those six loses have come against Detroit, LA Lakers, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, and New Orleans). The franchise is licking their wounds from the double-snub of Jefferson not getting into the All-Star game and Kevin Love, who is leading all rookies in rebounding and leading the league in offensive rebounds per 48 minutes (4th in rebounds/48 overall behind only Biedrins, Camby, and Howard), not being selected to the rookie team. Other than Jefferson, our main options are the hot-and-cold Randy Foye, the inconsistant Ryan Gomes, the suddenly gunshy Mike Miller, the selfish Rashad McCants, a point guard who can't shoot jumpers in Sebastian Telfair, and a rookie power forward in Love.

So, without Jefferson, who will the Wolves start? Obviously they're going to get more minutes and production out of Love, who will hopefully continue to improve during the season and avoid the rookie wall. He's been starting in the absense of Craig Smith, who just went down with a cracked rib by the way, and will continue to do so. I think they'll have no choice but to start Jason Collins. Love cannot play center consistantly as evidenced by the way the Wolves got destroyed by Yao Ming the other night...Love just isn't big or tall enough. Foye and Bassy will continue to start, but they're both going to have step up big time...but that's going to harder, since the defense of EVERY team facing the Wolves will now be geared to stopping them first and foremost rather than Jefferson. I can tell you that EVERY game this season, EVERY team...the defensive scheme is designed with Al Jefferson in mind, and that's where guys like Foye, Miller, and Love get a lot of their open looks. It's going to be harder for them now.

If Mike Miller was waiting for some unseen green light to start fucking shooting the ball more than five times a game, I think the signal just turned. I think it's really up to him more than anyone else to step up. Foye of course is another guy who will need to step up. In terms of dark horse guys who might step up and start filling in that scoring hole...McCants, who is back in the rotation after being out of it for most of January, and Rodney Carney, who is having a career scoring year and is a dead-eye from that corner 3, are guys to watch.

Ultimately though, I think that Kevin McHale is going to ask Love to carry a lot of the burden left by Jefferson. It's going to be interesting to see how Love, just 20 years old, handles this increased responsibility halfway through his rookie season.

One thing I know for certain: the Wolves are going to be in better draft position than I thought.

  1. All I have to say is this is officially the nail in the coffin for my fantasy team. My team was great before the injuries and I was just holding on to the hope that I could squeeze into the playoffs and get healthy. Now I have no shot at even getting into the playoffs.

About the all-star snub, I thought he definitely should have been in instead of Shaq. It seemed that people thought Shaq was a sure thing all-star this year, but Jefferson's numbers were better in every category except field goal percentage. Granted there is the bad team vs. good team debate, but I would say that the suns are underachieving this year while the Timberwolves were currently overachieving almost singlehandedly due to Jefferson.

  2. Is this the same Collins who played for the Nets?

If so, he was one of the top 5 league leaders in team defense two years ago. That is, despite his individual numbers, he caused the largest decrease of offensive efficiency in opposing teams. Hollinger's numbers I think.

    So its not all bad.

  3. Collins played during November and early December when Wittman was still coaching, and he's a total scrub. I'll name his single useful attribute: He's 7 feet tall.

As for Hollinger's take on Collins...

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?playerId=987

He currently has a PER of .80. Point Eight-Oh. The average is fifteen...his highest career PER is just over 10, but his average over his seven seasons is more like 6...and Hollinger even goes out of his way to point out that he has had the WORST PER in the entire league for two consecutive seasons. He will probably be the starting center for the Minnesota Timberwolves unless we start playing Calvin Booth or Mark Madsen or move Brian Cardinal to the five (lol) or have Love try to play center, which is a terrible idea.

  4. Talking about Cardinal, I would love to see him get some more minutes. I went to a Golden State game in 2004 when I was visiting college and he was awesome. The custodian was doing all the dirty work and nailing threes. I followed him for a couple years after that and he never got minutes. It seemed like most of the time when he got minutes he produced.

  5. He's a scrappy role player who the fans like, and I'm glad he gets a few minutes a game, but he's not going to be the difference-maker the Wolves need with Big Al out. He takes charges and occasionally hits a 3, but he's really a poor shooter, totally unathletic, and gets posterized as often as he makes a good defensive play.

Needless to say, tomorrow's game against Toronto will be interesting. Whoever has Chris Bosh on their fantasy team, I'm envious of you.

  6. There is always one option for the Timberwolves. A young PF name Nigel Dixon is available I believe. Played for the Clippers for a bit. Also fat and awesome

  7. Then they could sell some sweet "Dixon size" jerseys!

  8. Another point i wanna make is that it seems like to me that the Wolves have been doing a lot worse with McCants back in the line up. I mean, they're losing started again partly cause the teams they're playing but partly cause he's back. Not to say that he's that horrible that he's making them lose or anything like that. It's the same way with Tottenham right now. Gareth Bale is this Welsh defender who is still a teenager. Two years ago people were going crazy about this kid but he's sorta fallen off. Anyway, Tottenham have yet to win a game with him in the lineup this season. That's not to say he's playing bad, but he's just really bad luck for them or something. This, in turn, has led Harry Redknap to leave him off the roster for the last few matches. I feel bad for him though, and Tottenham continue to slide backward toward relegation...

  9. Yeah, Mark. Make a soccer post if you want to do that. Casual mention is one thing but over half the post was about soccer. Bum.

  10. Oh, let Mark talk about soccer, this is supposed to be fun. =)

As for McCants, while the stats show that we do have a much worse record when he plays/scores, there are two things I want to mention.
    1. We've been losing again, 6 of our last 7, because our schedule has been really tough. We played, in this order, Detroit, Lakers, Boston on the road, Indiana on the road, Atlanta, Houston on the road, and New Orleans on the road. We won against Indiana, but lost to everyone else...and understandably, those are all much better teams than the Wolves.
    2. With so many injuries, and the way I've watched McCants practice and practice and practice over the last 2 months, he's ready to get some consistent minutes again. I think McHale-ball will suit him better than Witt-ball every did anyway.
