Muzak: Drew's Track Pack

Here's my list of 10 songs, with a Jared-like description next to each one.

Moth by Ours - This is probably my favorite band and favorite song of theirs at the moment. The lead singer has a crazy range, probably comparable to Matt Bellamy.

Needle in the Hay by Elliott Smith - Just a great acoustic and depressing song about a junkie needing his fix. It's also the song in the Royal Tenenbaums when Luke Wilson tries to commit suicide.

Sunshine by John Murphy - This is the main theme song in the movie Sunshine. It really is epic and I want it played when/if I ever die.

Soldier's Poem by Muse - I think everybody here knows Muse, but just had have them on here. This song rules and I'm in the process of making a music video for it.

Timebomb by Old 97's - Finally an upbeat song on my list! I think they are technically a country band, so I guess they are my only exception thus far of "all country sucks."

Kill Monsters in the Rain by Steel Train - Really weird how I found them. I was on wikipedia looking at Arrested Development, which lead me to look at the actors and their upcoming projects, which lead me to Maebe (whatever her real name is), which led me to find out she's dating some dude from the band Steel Train, which I found out was about to play on Conan after a commercial break. Boom.

The Day the World Went Away by Nine Inch Nails - This is the song from the Terminator Salvation trailer. It's an alright song, but in context of the movie, it rules. Notice how any NiN song in any trailer = completely badass trailer.

Four Winds by Bright Eyes - My fried got me to listen to this band a couple days ago. They kinda sound like Modest Mouse, so I thought I'd put em up here.

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley - After watching Watchmen, I started listening to this song again. It is a much more personal version of it and way better than the original, in my opinion.

  1. Good songs, Drew. With the exception of one or two songs, your taste seems very similar to my sister and a lot of my friends from college. I've never been a big fan of Bright Eyes... something about his voice just bothers me. Definitely never heard of Steel Train. Interesting sound... I'll look them up.

  2. Don't worry, I don't think the Old 97's are country. The term I've heard for that type of music is CowPunk which is way cooler. really liked that song.

The Steel Train song was better than the one you played for me back in AK. might have to download it.

And I'm glad this Hallelujah song was on key.. unlike in Watchmen

Elliot Smith sounds so depressed. Whatever happened to him?

  3. I'm sorry to say it, but...I'm disappointed, Drew. I didn't really like many of these...even the Muse song you put on there is one of my least favorite tracks from their most recent album. Not your fault, if you like it that's cool, but I wasn't into really any of it.

I'm always amazed at how people who know each other so well, good friends even!, can have such divergent music tastes. I'm eager for it to be my turn, though I'm a little low on truly new music right now.

  4. First of all, I'm an idiot because there's only 9 songs in a 10 song list.

I saw that Timebomb is coming out or already came out for Rock Band in a... country pack. So, despite your best efforts to make me feel better Boardman, it is still considered country. They don't really have the country voices, which is probably why I don't hate them.

Boardman, maybe you're doing a high brow joke again with your Elliott Smith comment, but he commited suicide like 5 years ago.

Matt, that's funny because I don't really like Muse's new album except for Soldier's Poem and Take A Bow.

And Matt, all my friends here listen to shitty rap like Little Wayne, so I know all too much about having complete polar opposite tastes in music with friends. Sucks, because nobody wants to go to any concerts with me, so I haven't even been to one since being down here.

  5. Yeah, I hate that. Without Mark here, my options for people to see concerts with has dropped to pretty much zero. I went to see Beck and Ratatat without him; I was lucky enough to find a friend from college at the Beck show, but I was all alone for Ratatat, and even though it was an amazing show at First Ave, it was so weird to go alone.

Drew, at least you have better music taste that your friends. And Boardman. But that goes without saying.

  6. Its tough to get people to see concerts here too. But I have seen Puddle of Mudd, Aranda, Saliva, Pop Evil, and Modest Mouse here live now.

  7. Pop Evil? That sounds horrible, but i guess you can't judge a book by it's cover, unless it's Boardman and music...
