A Terrifying Vision of the Future

Do you guys really think that the things Simmons is predicting here will come true?

I really want to just dismiss many of his bold predictions as untrue, but as Simmons often does, he backs up his points with extensive research and convincing anecdotes and sources and historical precedence. Do you think some NBA teams are going to go under? Do you think that, as he claims, 2 or 3 or more teams will be forced to relocate? What about the claim that 15 NHL teams will go under? Most importantly, do you think we have an unavoidable lockout coming in a couple years?

I hope he's wrong, I really do.

  1. I've been listening to him everyday since the new year and he brings this up a lot in his podcast. It seems that most of the NBA teams have problems with their owners not having enough money, even good teams. Plus a lot of it has to do with various teams not being in good cities. Like New Orleans, that city just cannot support two pro teams and the saints are more popular and have more history. He hasn't really talked about any NHL teams, but it's gonna be hard for that league to survive, just thinking about the popularity and also the sponsors and stuff not getting enough back on their investments. I hope it's not true either, but he might be right.

  2. I'm with you, two: I can see all of his points, but I just don't want to believe it. However, I think the loan Stern just took out is a very large indicator/precursor of what is to come. The NBA is a business first, and like many companies now, it needs to make adjustments if it wants to survive.

The PA will have to cave at some point when the teams come calling. I feel bad for D.Fish when that happens! He's going to have a heavy burden...

I've had some of his thoughts in my head for the past eight months or so. Basically, the trade deadline showed Simmons is right. I'm not so sure about a lockout, but I do think there will be some drastic changes for salaries to come.

Anybody read the article read this on NBA.com?

It kinda goes a long with Simmons. Sad days could be ahead. But a stronger league will come of it, I hope.

I've always felt the NHL doesn't get what it deserves. Maybe, after the economy crisis, people will start watching again.
